Tree Recycling

Recycle Your Christmas Tree and Reduce Landfill Waste

Once the lights and ornaments come off, many Christmas trees end up in landfills – where they decompose without oxygen and release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. In New Canaan there’s a better option.

Now in our 6th year, Planet New Canaan partners with the New Canaan Department of Public Works, Exchange Club of New Canaan, and Service League of Boys to give holiday trees a second life through TreeCycle.

Why Tree Recycling Matters

Christmas trees are bulky organic waste. When landfilled, they contribute to methane emissions and unnecessary hauling. TreeCycle helps:

  • Reduce landfill waste
  • Support local ecosystems
  • Create mulch for community trails
  • Protect riverbanks from erosion

What once sparkled in living rooms now strengthens the ground beneath our feet.

Join Our Annual TreeCycle Collection

Each January, residents are invited to drop off undecorated Christmas trees at Steve Benko Pool. With help from SLOBS volunteers, trees are unloaded and sent for reuse.

This season alone, over 900 trees—100 more than last year— were collected and reclaimed. Most are turned into mulch for local trails, while others are placed along riverbanks to help prevent erosion.

Instead of heading to landfills, your tree becomes a resource right here in our community.
